We are building on our long history of impact investing to catalyze inclusion and equity.

  • The Metlife Foundation closed a $2 million equity commitment in the Illumen-managed fund of funds;
  • Illumen Capital leverages its investment power to deliver capital with evidenced-based bias-reduction training and coaching for its portfolio managers;
  • The training helps managers make better decisions and expand their investable landscape.

Recent investments in our communities help support racial equity and inclusion in a number of ways.

  • $25 million+ in COVID-19 relief efforts to supported underserved communities around the world, initially to support healthcare and immediate economic relief for families. Later grants supported economic recovery, particularly for entrepreneurship and small businesses. Another $500,000 grant increased vaccination distribution in underserved communities.
  • A $10 million commitment to Inclusiv Southern Equity Fund to invest capital in credit unions serving low-income and racially and ethnically diverse communities in 17 southeastern states.
  • Research for Prosperity Now who worked in partnership with Black/African American-led, community-based organizations to explore the effectiveness of programs, products, and services in addressing the socioeconomic status of Black/African American clients.

 Our support of diverse talent spans multiple phases of career preparation and life — from college to the corporate world to business ownership.

  • The Metlife Foundation committed an additional $5 million, in addition to the $10 million it already contributes annually, to advance racial equity in Black educational and career opportunities, Black business ownership, and racial justice
  • The Metlife Foundation also provided $1 million to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). With that funding, the UNCF established the Metlife Foundation Scholarship Fund, which will support 60 college juniors attending historically black colleges and universities and who are majoring in business, accounting, or finance.
  • Externally, we support several programs to advance the development of Black/African American leaders in the corporate pipeline. These programs include: The Consortium, INROADS, SEO, the ELC Mid-Level Managers' Symposium, the Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit, and the McKinsey Black Executive Leadership Program.
